Verizon Wireless is hoping that a new device and service it is offering, so far called ‘The Hub’ will do what nobody else has managed to do and change the way people think about and use home phones.
The Hub is essentially a digital phone system that connects to the internet to receive and make calls. But it also has additional built-in internet smarts anc can look up and download other information and can communicate via texting and other means with Verison cell phones and mobile devices. Verizon is hoping that people who use its wireless phone services will get The Hub for their home phone service and then also connect their cell phones into the system, the idea being that the Hub service can synchronize calendars and driving directions and other common pieces of information across a household.
Pricing, availability and features are not yet finalized, but it is expected that the device will cost about $200 and service wil be $35 per month which will include unlimited national calling within the US and unlimited texting to the associated wireless devices. Since this is not particularly cheap phone service pricing – in fact it is downright expensive, Verizon has to be hoping that the additional services will be enough to make people pay more.
